Day 16 Monday, March 24

Yesterday while on our guided sightseeing tour of Sydney, our driver/guide recommended that we take time to visit the Queen Victoria Building, if only to take photos of the beautiful old interior, especially the ladies restrooms.

We had a little time this morning before our flight to Cairns so Norma, Donna, and I walked the few blocks to the Queen Victoria Building while Jeanne went off in search of the "perfect" opal for herself.
We walk past this amazing bread shop!
 and these fascinating metal sculptures...
...on our way to the Queen Victoria Building.

Once inside I am enthralled with the multiple patterns and colors of the old tile work covering all the floors.

This is truly an amazing entryway into the ladies toilets on this level...

Each level offers something different.
There are eateries on all levels with seating out on the walkways...

...beautiful granite in this ladies room....

...beautiful polished wood grain in this dog sculpture....Mitch, collecting money for guide dogs....

This tremendous clock hangs in the center...

We go downstairs to the building's underground level and find a subway station disgorging throngs of passengers.....and many more shops, cafes, assorted businesses.

Back above ground we encounter what Donna calls one of those crazy "mishmash" intersections!  When the "walk" signal lights up it signifies straight and diagonal pedestrian crossing is allowed.

It is a good thing we just recently had our breakfast because I was sure tempted by these scrumptious looking cupcakes!

We get back to our hotel with just enough time to go up to our room to double check that we had all of our things before we board the motor coach for our ride to the Sydney Airport and our flight to Cairns.  Jeanne is not in our room however her carry-on bags are still sitting there by her bed.
We board the motor coach and when it is time to go, Jeremy does his customary head count and comes up one short.  I tell him it is Jeanne who is missing and that her things are still up in our room.
We wait.  After about 15 minutes we see a taxi cab stop in front of our hotel and out pops Jeanne!  She hurries up to our room to retrieve her bags and hurries onto the waiting motor coach.  She has found the opal she has been searching for!  She found it in a shop back at The Rocks, where we visited a couple of days ago and this morning her taxi got tied up in the city's traffic.

We head to the Sydney Airport.  After checking in we are informed that there are thunderstorms between us and Cairns so our flight may be delayed.
There apparently were no "disruptions" because there was no one attending this desk at the Sydney Airport.

Our flight ended up being delayed for two hours so it was after dark when we finally arrived in Cairns.
Our tour director, Jeremy, agreed to meet in the hotels lobby for a "walkabout town" for anyone interested.  When he came down to the Lobby a few minutes later, he had definitely changed into "Island Mode"----no suit and tie in Cairns!
Rosemary and Mary says they didn't get the note about "Island Mode"!
I walked with them a few blocks then I headed back to the hotel and crashed.
That bed looked too inviting!  Gotta rest up for our day of adventure on the Great Barrier Reef tomorrow!
