Today we will say goodbye to the North Island, and to our driver/guide Chris, as he drops us off at the Rotorua Airport,
Signs inside the Rotorua Airport terminal...
from which we will fly New Zealand Air to Queenstown (via Christchurch) for a three-night stay at the Rees Hotel Queenstown, which sits on the shore of beautiful Lake Wakatipu.
We have the afternoon free to explore Queenstown.
This is our favorite souvenir shop in Queenstown!
We saw several backpackers in town and it reminded me of my A.T. Hiker friends, Country Mouse & Shadow, who came to New Zealand last year to hike the Te Aurora Trail. You can read their journal about that hike here: http://bjandclara.blogspot.com
Here is several of our group waiting at the shuttle stop in Queenstown for a ride back to our hotel.
The toilets near the shuttle stop had an unusual door-lock system:
As we are waiting at the shuttle stop, we look to our right and see the Skyline Restaurant located on Bob's Peak, perched high above the resort town of Queenstown. That is where we are having dinner this evening!
What incredible views we have as we ride the gondola up the mountainside to our dinner reservations at the Skyline Restaurant!
What an awesome setting for our delicious dinner!
After dinner, we "sisters" strolled about the walkways on top of the mountain.
...and Norma and Donna found a new friend!
Back inside, we stopped by the Jelly Bean Store where there were literally 100's of flavors/colors of jellybeans to choose from and Donna purchased a variety pack!
What's not to love about our very nice accommodations at the Rees Hotel!
When we step out onto our private balcony, this is our amazing view of Lake Wakatipu!
Tomorrow we travel to Milford Sound, one of the finest of New Zealand's fjords, Milford Sound is enclosed by sheer rock walls climbing 3,900 feet from the sea!
