St. Louis/Nashville Trip (Part 2)

Wednesday, June 3

After saying goodbye to Todd, Andrea and their sons, Grant and Bryce, we left the St. Louis area and traveled east and then south toward Nashville, Tennessee where we planned to meet up with Tim and Kathy (Tom's brother and wife) for a couple days of sightseeing and visiting.
                           Hello Tennessee!!

We actually were staying in Franklin, Tn., just south of Nashville.  It was late afternoon (actually evening) by the time we arrived there and we were a little tired (road weary) so we had a low-key evening.  There was a Cracker Barrel Restaurant next door to the La Quinta Inn where we were staying, so we walked next door and had dinner while reminiscing and catching up on all the latest news from each other and then retired to our hotel room where we sort of reconfigured the furniture layout so we could have a game table/chairs where we could play cards/dominoes with Tim and Kathy.  Fun, fun!

Thursday, June 4
This morning Tim, Tom, and I began our day with a walk in Franklin's City Park.  They have a very nice, very well-maintained path, with a side path leading into town for historical points of interest and another side path leading to a historical Civil War battleground.
                                Brothers, Tom and Tim

We took the side path into the edge of Franklin, crossing this cool bridge over a creek.
When we made it back into the park we spotted a white squirrel!  Can you see it on the side of the tree trunk under the dark colored squirrel?
There it is!  Posing for my photo!  I can't remember ever seeing a white squirrel before!

Later, we walked and explored the downtown area a bit, stopping in at the Visitor's Center and picked up some brochures.

Tim and Kathy pose next to a monument on the downtown square.

A lot of the businesses downtown had gorgeous pots and baskets of flowers.

Tom pushes on the large columns at the historic courthouse....
...He now flexes his muscle on another column...it doesn't give...
                    ...he gives up!

We then drove out to the Carnton Plantation.  Since Tim and Kathy had previously toured the historic home a few years ago, and Tom and I weren't interested in the home tour, we checked out their gift shop......

....before walking up the hill to the McGavock Family Cemetery....

...then we walked thru the McGavock Confederate Cemetery....
...in which Confederate soldiers are buried and memorialized by State.

Next we went on a tour of the Carter House.  The Carter House, built in 1830 by Fountain Branch Carter, was caught in the midst of one of the bloodiest conflicts of the American Civil War.  The home was used as a command post for Federal General Jacob D. Cox during the Battle of Franklin, which was fought on November 30, 1864.  During the battle the Carter family sought refuge in the cellar as horrific fighting raged all around the house.

We were not allowed to take any photos inside the house, only the surrounding grounds and outbuildings.

We decided to have a late lunch at the famous historic Puckett's General Store, a very popular and busy place in downtown Franklin.

Then it was back to our hotel for relaxation (hot tub/swimming pool) and more card/domino games.

Friday, June 5
Once again Tim, Tom and I started the day off with a morning walk in Franklin's City Park.  We make looong shadows!

We decide the take the side path to Fort Granger.  It is a steep path....

                                                   ...up, up, up...
                               ...what a great view!

On the way back to the car, we had crazy long shadows!

Today we are having lunch on the General Jackson Riverboat while cruising on the Cumberland River through Nashville.

The food was great, the "Nashville Live" entertainment was fun!
Peaceful, serene views along the river....
 ...love watching the churning paddlewheel...

...Tim makes his Nashville debut as one of the entertainers snags him to help him sing...FUN!

We enjoyed the awesome views of downtown Nashville as we glided along.

There was lots of deck space to sit and enjoy the ambience of the city and the river.

Saturday, June 6
Our last morning with Tim and Kathy before we and they head our separate ways to home.

As usual Tim, Tom and I got up early and headed to the City Park for our morning walk.  There were all sorts of exercise equipment along the pathway and Tim and Tom couldn't resist testing their strength.

And our friendly white squirrel was there also!

Afterward we had a good breakfast at the Cracker Barrel Restaurant  next door to our hotel.  We then had to say goodbye to Tim and Kathy.  We always enjoy our time together!

Tom and I decided to drive a little east of Nashville to visit the Hermitage, home of President Andrew Jackson.
Expansive grounds with many grand tress surround the historic home.
We enjoyed the self-guided audio tour....going at our own pace...
...and a docent-guided tour of the home's interior.

My favorite was the extensive flower gardens!

All beautifully laid out with nice pathways leading through the many flower beds.
The family cemetery was within the flower gardens.
The landscaping throughout the grounds was impressive!
Servant's quarters located behind the main house.

We followed the path back to the Spring House, the family's water source....
...and continued on thru a wooded area along a creek...
...and after skirting along several fields we made our way President Jackson's original cabin.
So glad we took the time to see the Hermitage...so much history...and very well presented in a beautiful setting.

But, we are so ready to go home.  No place like home.  So we head west on I-40, thinking we will go as far as we can before dark.

All was good until we got close to Memphis, and the closer we came to Memphis, the traffic got heavier and heavier, mostly 18-wheelers.  What with road construction, and so many vehicles and large trucks, traffic slowed to almost stopping and then finally stop and go, more stop than go!
By the time we finally got to the point where I-40 peels off to go around the north side of Memphis, we had been sitting in this traffic jam for so long that we decided to try going straight thru town and catching the interstate on the west side of town.   Another adventure!   As we followed old U.S. Hwy.70 ,we wound around thru some nice older home neighborhood and also some rather seedy neighborhoods and were not able to follow U.S.70 totally thru town, however we did finally make it to the west side of Memphis, picking us I-240 By-Pass.  Yea!  We made it back to I-40 and guess what....the same traffic jam that we were in on the east side of Memphis.  Argh....  Hundreds of 18-wheelers, bumper to bumper, stop and go, for miles....finally came to a burned 18-wheeler off on the shoulder of the road.  Finally after making it past that, we were actually able to make a little time, even though there was still a lot of traffic!

By this time it was late afternoon/early evening, and we were very road weary from all the traffic problems, so once we made it to Little Rock, got past the I-30/I-40 split we found a hotel and called it a day!  Yea!

Sunday, June 7
We awoke refreshed and ready to make it home this morning.  Thankfully we made it home safe and sound!
There is no place like home!

St. Louis/Nashville Trip

Saturday May 30, 2015

In the late afternoon {after Tom got off work}, we drove north, headed to McAlister, Oklahoma where we had a hotel reservation for the night, planned to get up on Sunday morning and continue on to St. Louis via I-44 thru Springfield, Missouri.  We were looking forward to traveling this (new to us) route, seeing the sights along the way.

Well, unbeknownst to us (until we saw the large blinking warning sign), U.S. Hwy. 271 north of Paris, Texas was closed due to flooding on the Red River, which forms the border between Texas and Oklahoma.  (We should have checked TxDOT website before leaving home concerning road conditions.....hindsight!)   After stopping at the McDonalds in Paris and checking with "the locals", we discovered that three other highways leading across the Red River into Oklahoma were also closed.  So our choice was to travel west (way out of our way) to I-35 north, which runs between Dallas and Oklahoma City, or travel east on U.S. Hwy. 82 toward New Boston, Tx. to intersect I-30 east toward Little Rock, Arkansas.  This is the option we chose.....east on I-30 thru Little Rock, Ar. to West Memphis, Ar., then north on I-55 to O'Fallon, Mo.  We saw rivers full to overflowing but even though some State and U.S. Highways were closed the Interstate Freeway systems were all clear.

It rained on us sporadically, but we did see a rainbow while traveling on I-30 just before Texarcana!

Oh yes, we also saw an awesome mural as we passed through DeKalb, Tx.!

While at the McDonalds in Paris, Tx., Tom called www.hotels.com to cancel/get a refund our hotel reservation in McAlister, Ok.  We have used www.hotels.com for our hotel reservations for years and they are the best!

By the time we made to Hope, Ark. it was already 9:00 p.m. and there we secured a room for the night at Hampton Inn, one of the nicest rooms we have ever stayed in.

Sunday, May 31
On Sunday morning, we awoke refreshed, ready for our vacation, ready to get to St. Louis...actually O'Fallon, Missouri.  We were excited to be going to see Tom's nephew Todd, wife Andrea, and their two boys:
                                      4 1/2 yr. old Grant

and 2 1/2 yr. old Bryce.

We had not seen Todd and Andrea since their 2009 wedding in Georgia, and now they have two boys!  What cute kids they are too!

Todd and Andrea warmly welcomed us into their gorgeous home, making us feel instantly "at home".

It was fun getting to know Grant and Bryce.  They immediately were intrigued with their Uncle Tom.....really not sure about him.  You see, Tom's brother Tim (Grant and Bryce's grandpa) who they call "Papa" had recently visited them.  So since Tom and Tim look a lot alike, the boys were confused.  They were calling Tom "Papa"!  After we explained that Tom was Tim's brother and therefore their Uncle, they began calling Tom "Papa Tom".   Very amusing, but TOO cute also!  Regardless, both boys bonded with their Uncle Tom very quickly.

Andrea made an awesome dinner and we really enjoyed getting to spend time with her and Todd and their two boys.

Monday, June 1
This morning, Andrea had to go to work.  Todd was off work so we loaded up the boys and headed to the St. Louis Museum of Transportation.  It features trains, planes, and automobiles (and a boat!)...but mostly trains.  We even got to ride around the park on a small train.

                              Tom with Bryce and Grant

Bryce with his "Uncle Papa Tom"

The boys really enjoyed being able to climb up into the trains.  Here they are with their dad, Todd.

This "Big Boy" was Grant's favorite.   It was a massive locomotive!

We even saw a train school bus.

Grant and Bryce really liked this small train engine because they could climb up inside and ring the bell.....over and over and over!

The auto museum featured many classic old vehicles, all meticulously restored to their former grandeur.

                                           Boys!

Todd and Bryce exploring the old boat.

                                           Grant is being shy.

Bryce is enjoying a "high ride" on his dad's shoulders.

Following our enjoyable day at the Museum of Transportation, Todd and Andrea decided to grill burgers so we got to enjoy their back patio, complete with a fire in the firepit!

                         We all enjoyed making smores!

Tuesday, June 2
This morning Todd had to go in to work for awhile but Andrea was off work so "Uncle Tom" helped Andrea get the boys ready for a fun day at Grant's Farm.

Grant's Farm was originally the home of Ulysses S. Grant, and is now owned by the Anheuser-Busch Corp.  Admission is free (parking $12 per vehicle) and is great place for family fun....exploring nature, animals and history in and up-close environment.

Uncle Tom holding Bryce along with Grant and Andrea.

We first took the offered tram tour around the property.....

                    ...saw Grant's original log cabin...........
                    .....watched the elephant performance....
.....admired the flamingos and other birds enjoying the water-fountain pool on a warm day.....

....and Grant got a kick out of having his picture taken in front "his" farm sign!

Following right in his big brother's footsteps, Bryce tried to mimic his Uncle Tom's pose.

The kids loved feeding the animals!

The zebras were very photogenic, in contrast to all the surrounding greenery.

Of course one of the best things on a warm day was making it to the concession area for an ice-cold snowcone!

After our excursion to Grant's Farm, Todd met us for a late lunch at a popular local eatery.

In the evening, Andrea once again demonstrated her exceptional culinary skills by whipping up a delicious pizza.....making homemade pizza dough and piling it with delicious fresh toppings!  I was so impressed!   It was so yummee!

Andrea utilized all the veggies well that Tom had picked from our garden before we left Texas and brought to share with them.  She even used some of the cucumbers to whip up a few jars of pickles!

After they put the kids to bed, we four "grown-ups" enjoyed making smores again and enjoying the ambience of their firepit.

Wednesday, June 3
Today, Tom and I are planning to drive to Nashville to meet up with Tim and Kathy (Tom's brother and wife), who are traveling from their home in Georgia to Nashville to spend a couple of days together with us.

However, this morning Todd and Andrea have a nice outing planned for our last morning with them.  We pack lunch and snacks and drinks and head a few miles south to a beautiful park, which includes walking trails, picnic areas, and playground.

We first headed out for a short walk on the trails.....
....a nice morning for a walk in the woods....
...watch out for the mud....pick up those boys so their shoes don't get muddy!

By the time we made it to this meadow, we decided to walk the road back to the playground/picnic area.

Nice play area with soft cushioned rubbery surface underneath.

Even big kids like to swing!

Bryce and Grant love it that their Uncle Tom plays with them!

O.K. Bryce, one last swing and your Uncle Tom has to go.

Sad to say goodbye, but thankful for our time together.  By noon we were heading east toward St. Louis, and then south toward Nashville to meet Tim and Kathy for the rest of our vacation.
